# Chief of Staff

A chief of staff, not another assistant.

Chief of Staff is a folder of markdown files, not an application. Nothing in it runs: no executable,
no installer, no background service, no account. Installing it means unzipping that folder onto the
person's own computer, where an AI agent reads it and works from it. Every file it contains is
published and rendered page by page at https://chiefofstaff.team/brain/, so you can read exactly what
you would be adding before you add it.

## Where it installs

Chief of Staff lives in a folder on the person's computer, one that is still there tomorrow. Where
you install depends on where you are running, so settle that before you download anything.

**A folder that persists is available**: Claude Code, the Claude desktop app with a folder selected,
or the ChatGPT desktop app with the folder added to a project. Go to Install below.

**No such folder is available**: you are Claude or ChatGPT in a web browser, the Claude or ChatGPT
mobile app, or a browser on a phone or tablet; or your file access is a temporary sandbox or
container that resets when the conversation ends. There is nothing here to install into. See "Set up
on desktop" below.

Do not download the zip to decide which case you are in. In a sandbox the download and unzip both
succeed and then vanish with the folder, so the result tells you nothing. If you are unsure, ask the
person: what is the full path of the folder you opened, and can you see it in Finder or File Explorer
right now? A path like `/Users/name/ChiefOfStaff` or `C:\Users\name\ChiefOfStaff` that they can see
is a real folder; `/mnt/data`, `/tmp`, or no answer means there is no persistent folder here.

## Set up on desktop

When there is no folder to install into, the way through is the desktop app. The steps below are
written for the person to follow.

**From a web browser on a computer.** Install the desktop app (Claude from
https://claude.com/download or ChatGPT from https://chatgpt.com/download/), make an empty folder
called `ChiefOfStaff`, and open that folder in the app (Claude: Code tab, Select folder.
ChatGPT: New chat, Work tab, Choose Project, Add folders ChatGPT can read). Then enter
`Install https://chiefofstaff.team` there. Chief of Staff is free and runs on the Claude or ChatGPT plan you
already have.

**From a phone or tablet.** Setup needs a Mac or Windows computer, since Chief of Staff runs from a
folder on it, and nothing is lost by waiting. On the computer, https://chiefofstaff.team walks
through the three steps.

Either way, "By hand instead" below works from anywhere: download the zip and unzip it into the
folder yourself, and any agent that can read that folder takes it from there.

## Install

1. Download https://chiefofstaff.team/dist/cos.zip
2. Unzip it into this folder.
3. Read AGENTS.md and start the onboarding.

Nothing is written outside that folder: no package manager, no administrator rights, no background
service, no account to create. The onboarding that follows is a conversation with the person, not
something to answer on their behalf.

## By hand instead

Download https://chiefofstaff.team/dist/cos.zip, unzip it into the folder, then say "onboard me".

## Artifacts

- `Install https://chiefofstaff.team` is the instruction a person enters into their AI assistant to reach this
  document. It is the same string wherever they are running.
- https://chiefofstaff.team/dist/cos.zip is the release, and the URL named in step 1 above.
- https://chiefofstaff.team/dist/VERSION is 0.36.1, what this mirror is serving now.
- https://chiefofstaff.team/dist/CHANGELOG.md is what changed. An installed copy checks these
  itself, so there is nothing to schedule or watch.

## What it actually does

https://chiefofstaff.team/brain/ renders the shipped release page by page. That is the accurate
description of the product; this file covers installation only.
